They got married at the courthouse in 2021 — five minutes, no photographer, masks in the waiting room. It wasn't the wedding either of them had pictured, but it was the one they could actually have.

Three years later, they finally booked the photos they'd always meant to get around to. Same rings, a little more sure of each other, standing in the kind of light neither of them thought to ask for the first time — and she laughed the whole way through, the way she always does when she's genuinely happy.

She brought him home from the hospital by herself — car seat buckled in, driving slower than she'd ever driven in her life, calling her mom the second she parked. That first year, most nights it was just the two of them: bottles at 2 a.m., a stroller she learned to fold one-handed, a high chair covered in more food than actually got eaten.

She started taking a photo every week, mostly so she'd remember it later. By his first birthday, there were fifty-two of them, printed and bound into one book. She still flips through it some nights — proof that she built this whole first year on her own, and it turned out just fine.
